What is Medicare?

Medicare is the federal health insurance program.

Who is eligible for Medicare?

People who are 65 and older
People under the age of 65 who have been entitled to Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for at least 24 months.
People who have been diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease

Traditional Medicare does not fully cover all costs associated with:

Hospitalization
Dental/Vision
Doctor Office Visits
Prescription Medication

At little to no additional cost, you could receive additional benefits, like over-the-counter allowances and transportation assistance, as well as reduced medical and prescription costs.

PART A:
Hospital Insurance

For 2023, the Part A Original Medicare deductible for each inpatient hospital stay is $1,600.

Most people do not pay a Part A premium if they have worked and paid into Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.

Part A covers:

Inpatient hospital care
Skilled nursing facilities
Hospice care
Home healthcare

PART B:
Medical
Insurance

For 2023, the Part B Original Medicare deductible is $226.

Most people must pay a monthly Part B premium. Part B monthly premium for 2023 is $164.90 and may be higher depending on your income level.

If you do not enroll in Part B during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), and do not have other insurance coverage, you may have a late enrollment penalty. The late enrollment penalty will add an extra 10% of the Part B premium for each 12-month period you could have been enrolled in Part B but weren’t.

Part B covers:

Medically necessary doctor visits
Outpatient care
Durable Medical Equipment (DME): DME may include wheelchairs, blood sugar meters, oxygen equipment and walkers
Preventive services: These services may include colonoscopies, mammograms, vaccines, yearly Wellness visits

PART C:
Medicare
Advantage

Part C is also known as Medicare Advantage.

You must be enrolled in Part A and Part B to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan.

Medicare Advantage plans, by law, must offer at a minimum the same coverage as Original Medicare.

These plans are offered by private health insurance companies as an alternative to Original Medicare.

Many plans offer coverage and additional benefits not offered by Original Medicare, like:

Out-of-pocket limits
Prescription drug coverage (Part D)
Dental coverage
Vision coverage

PART D:
Prescription Drug Coverage

Part D is prescription drug coverage offered by private insurance companies. You must sign up for Part A or Part B before you enroll in a Part D plan.

(AEP):

Medicare Annual Enrollment Period

Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) occurs from October 15th through December 7th and is the time for you to make changes to your Medicare coverage.

Plan coverage and cost may change for the upcoming year and it’s imperative to ensure that your coverage continues to meet your needs.

Happy with your current plan?

If you are happy with your current plan and have reviewed your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) letter from your current carrier, you do not need to do anything. The ANOC, which you should receive in September, will outline any changes to your current plan.

What changes can you make during AEP?

Enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) if you have original Medicare.
Switch from your current Medicare Advantage Plan to another Medicare Advantage Plan
Enroll in a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D)
Switch from your current Prescription Drug Plan to another Prescription Drug Plan

Currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan? Reasons why you may consider a change:

Your plan premium has increased
Your doctors are no longer in-network
Your current plan is no longer being offered
Additional benefits are no longer available

Medicaid

Medicaid may help pay for your Medicare Part B premium, Part B deductible, Part A deductible, as well as copays and coinsurance. Many people are eligible for Medicare and Medicaid, which is known as dual eligible.

After graduation, Erin returned to Fort Worth and began working in development for United Community Centers (UCC), a local nonprofit agency that has been serving the people of Fort Worth for more than 100 years. Following her time with UCC, she left to start work with her father as Director of Business Development for McDonald Law Firm where she played a significant role in the growth of the firm, including their Social Security Disability practice.

Erin’s work at both UCC and McDonald Law Firm expanded her passion for helping people – especially those who are experiencing medical or financial stress. This resolve to help people in need lead to her founding Panther Insurance Services.

Outside of work, Erin is still involved with UCC as a current board member. As a lover of dogs, she is a strong advocate for “adopt don’t shop” and encourages everyone to look at your local shelters when ready to make the important decision to bring a pet into your life. She enjoys spending time at the family lake house at Possum Kingdom where her family has been going since the early 1960s.
